Breast Augmentation

It may seem counterintuitive to add volume to your breasts after weight loss, but the truth is, the majority of our female patients elect to do so with breast augmentation as part of their body contouring strategy. The reason for this is during the process of losing weight, breast tissue is lost as well and therefore, even when the excess skin is reduced, there’s often a need to replace volume loss. Breast augmentation with implants is a relatively straightforward way to restore breast volume and create a more youthful and aesthetically pleasing appearance.

Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. David Kaufman strives for natural-looking curves that will enhance your new, trim body. When you’re ready to start learning about the possibilities, request a consultation with our practice.  Dr. Kaufman works with weight loss patients from Reno to San Francisco, from Modesto to Crescent City.

Candidates for Breast Augmentation in Sacramento

The best candidates for breast augmentation are women who are in good physical shape and have realistic expectations. You should be at or close to your target weight, and also, fully committed to your new shape.

Further, the best candidates should view breast augmentation as one of many positive things they’re doing for their self-image and overall well being, not as a solution to unrelated problems. Additionally, you must understand that, though usually uncomplicated, breast augmentation poses routine risks common to any surgery, such as infection and blood clots, as well as risks specific to the procedure such as capsular contracture. At the time of your consultation, Dr. Kaufman will review all possible complications with you prior to your post weight loss surgery in Sacramento.

Breast Augmentation Surgery and Recovery

Breast augmentation increases the size of your breasts with the use of an implant, either silicone or saline. Each comes in a variety of shapes, sizes and projections, and there are implants with textured surfaces and implants with smooth surfaces.  During your consultation, Dr. Kaufman will evaluate your frame, remaining tissue and skin tone to determine which option is best for you, based on your desired results.

Another decision you and Dr. Kaufman will make is the location of the incision. Dr. Kaufman finds that for most women, breast enhancement is best accomplished through the inframammary or periareolar approach. Thus, although Dr. Kaufman is trained in transumbilical augmentation (belly button incision) and transaxillary augmentation (armpit incision), he does not feel that either is a good option for a variety of reasons, and therefore they are not performed in our office.

With regard to your implant placement, Dr. Kaufman prefers below the chest muscle to create the most natural, pleasing breast shape possible.

Breast augmentation takes about an hour and a half to complete and is performed under general anesthesia, in our onsite, outpatient surgical center.

As for your recovery, you can expect to be sore for a few days following your procedure, but feeling good and ready to return to work within a week and fully healed in six to eight weeks.
